Responsible Gaming

If gambling has stopped being a choice, the fastest route to help is at the bottom of this page. You do not have to read the rest first — jump straight to the helplines.

An honest starting point

Real-money gaming is designed to be engaging, and it is profitable for the people who run it precisely because most players lose over time. That is not a scandal; it is the arithmetic. Every game on this site returns less than it takes, and the return-to-player figures we publish describe how much less.

We earn a commission when people play. We are telling you this on a page about harm because a warning from someone with our incentives is worth less than a warning from someone without them — so please weigh it accordingly, and please read the rest anyway.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

Gambling has stopped being entertainment when any of the following is true:

  • You are playing to win back money you have lost.
  • You are spending more than you decided to, more often than not.
  • You are borrowing, selling things, or using money meant for rent, food, school fees or bills.
  • You are hiding how much you play, or lying about it to people close to you.
  • You feel anxious, irritable or low when you cannot play.
  • Play is affecting your work, your studies, your sleep or your relationships.
  • You have tried to cut down and could not.

One of these is a reason to pay attention. Several is a reason to act today.

Tools that actually work

Deposit limits. Set a daily, weekly or monthly cap inside the app. A limit set while you are calm binds the version of you who is not. Reductions usually take effect immediately; increases are deliberately delayed.

Session reminders. Enable a time alert so you are told how long you have been playing. Sessions run longer than people estimate, consistently.

Cooling-off. A short break — 24 hours to a few weeks — that locks you out and cannot be reversed early. Useful when you are not ready to stop but know you need to stop now.

Self-exclusion. A long or permanent block on your account. This is the strongest tool available and the right one if the warning signs above describe you.

Blocking software. Applications such as Gamban or BetBlocker restrict gambling sites and apps across your devices, which closes the gap that self-excluding from one operator leaves open.

Practical habits

  • Decide the amount before you open the app, and treat it as spent the moment you deposit.
  • Never deposit borrowed money.
  • Set an alarm for when you intend to stop, and stop when it goes off.
  • Do not play when you are upset, bored, drunk or trying to fix a bad day.
  • Keep a record of what you actually deposit over a month. It is almost always more than remembered.
  • Take the withdrawal. Money left in a gaming balance tends to be played back.

Three ideas that cost people money

“I am due a win.” Games have no memory. A run of losses does not make the next round more likely to pay. This belief has a name — the gambler’s fallacy — and it is the single most expensive idea in gambling.

“I can win it back.” Chasing losses increases stakes at exactly the moment judgement is worst. It is the mechanism by which a manageable loss becomes an unmanageable one.

“I have a system.” No staking pattern changes a game’s edge. Doubling after a loss only guarantees that the eventual losing streak is catastrophic instead of gradual.

If it is someone else

Approach it calmly and without an audience. Describe what you have observed rather than accusing. Do not pay their gambling debts — it removes the consequence without touching the cause. Do encourage them to call one of the helplines below, and consider calling one yourself: they advise families too, and living with someone else’s gambling is its own kind of difficult.

Under 18s

Real-money gaming is for adults aged 18 and over, without exception. If a young person has access to your device, use your phone’s parental controls, do not store payment methods in the app, and keep your account credentials private. Operators are required to verify age at KYC, and accounts found to belong to minors are closed with winnings forfeited.

What we will and will not do

We will keep the tools and helplines on this page linked from every page of this site, we will not use urgency language aimed at people trying to stop, and we will not write content that presents gambling as a way to solve money problems.

We cannot self-exclude you from the operator — that has to come from your account — and we cannot see whether you have. If you tell us you want to stop, we will point you here and to the helplines above, and we will not try to talk you out of it.
